About silverfish

Silverfish are very primitive insects with only 5 of the 28 Australian species having successfully invaded buildings. Being nocturnal these pest species restrict their activities to the dark undisturbed areas of your home, such as roof, subfloor and wall cavities. Silverfish are quite often found in baths and basins. This is because of their inability to climb smooth surfaces, not because they live in drains as most people believe. Silverfish prefer to feed on materials high in starch content, this includes photos, books, clothing, food crumbs and wallpaper. For a pest species silverfish have a very long lifecycle and are not very prolific. They can take up to 4 years to complete their lifecycle and generally lay eggs singularly. This gives homeowners and pest managers a definitive advantage. It means that it takes a significant amount of time for an infestation to build up and time to get the problem under control.

What you can do.

Avoid storing books, paper, photos and the like in your roof or closed cabinets. Inspecting incoming goods such as second hand books and furniture may help prevent an infestation. Unfortunately because of the areas that these insects frequent, treating these areas safely using household products is not going to be very effective. And it’s perhaps best to engage the help of a professional pest manager that is experienced in silverfish control, such as Laguna Pest Control.

What we can do.

Silverfish control is fairly straight forward if using the right products and the right application equipment. Effective control of silverfish involves the thorough treatment of likely activity areas such as roof and subfloor voids, combined with the residual treatment of your internal skirting’s. Our general pest treatment includes these measures and will control the heaviest of infestations or prevent one happening.

What to expect after the treatment.

To be silverfish free of course, but not straight away. As there are likely to be some areas that cannot be accessed for complete treatment such as wall voids. We need to allow time for any individuals to come out and come into contact with the chemical, hence why we use residual products. However as with all our general pest treatments we offer a 6 month free service period , so at any stage during this time you are not happy with the results ,we will retreat at no charge!
